▲ Eight people were injured after a man went on a weapon rampage at a large commercial facility in Namdong-gu, Incheon, on the afternoon of the 13th. The photo shows the suspect captured on closed-circuit (CC) TV in the 2nd-floor restaurant area of the building.
It has been revealed that the suspect who wielded weapons at a large commercial facility in Incheon had previously been punished for going out without authorization while wearing a location-tracking electronic anklet (electronic monitor).
According to the legal profession and police today (the 13th), the suspect, identified by the surname A, was previously sentenced to four years in prison and served time for attempted murder in 2015.
He was indicted for attempting to murder his former wife in her 40s by stabbing her multiple times with a weapon at his home in Incheon in February of that year because she refused to reconcile.
It was found that they met at a hospital in 2006 where they were hospitalized for alcohol dependency treatment, registered their marriage, and later separated.
Previously, A had multiple violent criminal records, including receiving a suspended prison sentence for attempted murder in 2005 and for violent acts in 2008. Consequently, he was ordered to wear an electronic anklet for 10 years until February 2029 following his release from prison, along with a restriction on going out at night (from midnight to 6:00 AM).
However, A violated the nighttime curfew four times in 2021, resulting in a 3 million won fine, and was also booked by the police last month for protesting with a weapon in front of a hospital in Gyeyang-gu, Incheon.
He reportedly staged the protests because his athlete's foot (tinea pedis) symptoms did not improve after receiving treatment at the hospital.
A was found to have committed the latest crime while still wearing the electronic anklet.
Around 1:40 PM today, A attacked random citizens with weapons tied to both of his hands at a commercial facility housing a Homeplus and other stores. He swung the weapons while moving from the second basement level to the third floor above ground before being subdued by citizens.
A police official explained, "We cannot confirm the suspect's past criminal record," adding, "As the investigation is currently underway, it is a matter to be confirmed through the investigation."
