A man in his 20s who repeatedly contacted a woman he accidentally met in an online game hundreds of times after she rejected his romantic advances has ultimately been punished for stalking.

Chuncheon District Court Judge Koh Bum-jin, presiding over Criminal Division 2, announced today (October 13) that he sentenced A, a 29-year-old man indicted for violating the Anti-Stalking Act, to six months in prison suspended for two years.

A was put on trial on charges of contacting B, a woman he met through an online game between March and August of last year, against her will approximately 400 times. This included sending gifts using the gift-giving feature to demand conversation after B blocked his KakaoTalk account.

The two met as teammates in League of Legends and occasionally enjoyed playing the game together.

Despite having a girlfriend at the time, A continuously demanded a romantic relationship with B. Feeling uncomfortable, B asked him not to make private contacts, which led to the stalking crime.

Judge Koh explained the reasoning behind the sentencing, stating, "Unfavorable factors include the fact that the victim is likely to have experienced considerable anxiety and psychological distress," while adding, "The sentence was determined by taking limited account of the fact that he admitted to all the crimes and deposited funds for the victim."
