Pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk is pushing for national health insurance coverage for its anti-obesity treatment, Wegovy.

Novo Nordisk Korea announced that it has submitted an application for health insurance reimbursement regarding Wegovy to the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service (HIRA).

Novo Nordisk explained that it is pursuing coverage to improve treatment accessibility for patients suffering from severe obesity accompanied by comorbidities.

Wegovy is a medication approved for weight management in patients with severe obesity or overweight individuals with conditions such as diabetes or high blood pressure, and it can also be prescribed to adolescents aged 12 and older.

A representative from Novo Nordisk stated, "Since the launch of Wegovy, we have strived to improve the treatment environment so that many obesity patients can receive proper care," adding, "This reimbursement application is an extension of those efforts."

Meanwhile, domestic pharmaceutical company Hanmi Pharmaceutical plans to launch a domestic anti-obesity drug, Effe, at the end of this month.

Hanmi Pharmaceutical has entered final coordination to determine the supply price for Effe.

The pharmaceutical industry expects that a 4-week supply of Effe will be priced in the 100,000-won range for the lowest dose.
