Kim Chan-sul, Mayor of Daedeok District in Daejeon, went on an indefinite hunger strike starting today (the 12th) in protest of the paralyzed operations and delayed organization of the Daedeok District Council.
During a press conference held today, Mayor Kim stated, "More than 100 days have passed since the launch of the 10th Daedeok District Council, yet it has failed to even finalize the basic formation of the council," adding, "I am entering an indefinite hunger strike until the Daedeok District Council is normalized."
"Urgent pending issues directly connected to the lives of district residents—such as the supplementary budget bill, emergency welfare and care, private consignment, and living environment improvements—are completely stalled at the threshold of the council," Kim pointed out. "The paralysis of the council translates directly into an administrative vacuum, and that suffering falls entirely upon the residents of Daedeok District."
He continued, "The district council even failed to keep its promise to 'complete council formation by October 10,'" urging, "Immediately respond to the anger of the 170,000 Daedeok District residents, complete the formation of the council right now, and restart the stalled legislative affairs for the people's livelihood."
Currently, the Daedeok District Council is experiencing repeated turmoil as four members belonging to the Democratic Party of Korea and four members belonging to the People Power Party fail to find common ground over the election of the chairperson and other structural formations.
Among the 227 local councils nationwide, the Daedeok District Council is the only one that has not yet finished electing its chairperson and completing its organization.
