The National Agricultural Products Quality Management Service (NAQS) announced on October 11 that it will conduct intensive safety inspections on agricultural products used for making kimchi, focusing on major production complexes and traditional markets, starting tomorrow (October 12) through November 30 ahead of the peak kimchi-making season.
The target products include Napa cabbage, radishes, green onions, ginger, chili peppers, carrots, mustard greens, and garlic, and inspections will check whether they comply with maximum residue limits (MRLs) for pesticides.
Agricultural products that exceed the permitted limits as a result of the inspections will be blocked from entering the market through measures such as delaying shipment and disposal, the agency plans.
NAQS stated that last year, it inspected around 800 cases of kimchi ingredients and successfully blocked 13 cases of agricultural products exceeding pesticide residue limits from being distributed in the market.
NAQS also plans to provide guidance to farmers in production areas on safe pesticide usage standards, including registered pesticides and pest control methods for each agricultural product.
