A tower crane counterweight accident at a power plant construction site in Bucheon, Gyeonggi Province, has left one worker dead and another injured.

According to the Ministry of Employment and Labor today (October 10), the accident occurred at around 3:10 PM yesterday (October 9) at a power plant construction site in Bucheon being built by DL E&C. While a tower crane counterweight was being installed, the hoisted counterweight swung uncontrollably and struck workers nearby.

As a result of the accident, a tower crane worker in his 50s identified by his surname A (58) was taken to the hospital in cardiac arrest and died, while another worker, B (58), sustained serious injuries and is receiving treatment.

Immediately following the accident, the Bucheon Office of the Ministry of Employment and Labor issued a work stoppage order and launched an investigation into the cause of the accident.

Labor authorities plan to check whether workplace safety rules were followed while also investigating potential violations of the Occupational Safety and Health Act and the Serious Accidents Punishment Act.

Under the Serious Accidents Punishment Act, a serious industrial accident applies when: ▲ one or more deaths occur; ▲ two or more injured persons requiring six months or more of treatment result from the same accident; or ▲ three or more persons contract occupational diseases such as acute poisoning from the same hazard within one year.
