A ceiling collapse at a building in Daegu where kitchenware and other goods were being sold to elderly people left 38 people injured.

The incident occurred on the morning of the 10th on the second floor of a four-story building in Gwaneum-dong, Buk-gu, Daegu, where a section of the suspended ceiling structure collapsed.

At the time, a company was selling kitchenware and other items to elderly people on the second floor, and 66 people present at the scene evacuated outside following the accident.

During the evacuation, 38 people sustained minor injuries, 9 of whom were transported to the hospital.

Authorities reported that none of the injured individuals have life-threatening conditions.

A fire official explained that the injuries appeared to have occurred as citizens panicked and evacuated, scraping against debris from the building.

Emergency authorities conducted a search of the scene immediately after the accident, and no additional casualties were found.

The building where the accident occurred is a four-story reinforced concrete structure built in 1994, and a grocery mart that operated on the first floor has suspended its business since the end of September.

Police and fire authorities plan to investigate the exact cause of the ceiling collapse and the circumstances surrounding the accident.

President Lee Jae-myung and Prime Minister Han Sung-sook received reports on the ceiling collapse and urgently instructed relevant agencies to make every effort to rescue lives and ensure thorough handling of the aftermath.
