The Democratic Party of Korea repeatedly urged an investigation today (October 10), questioning whether independent lawmaker Han Dong-hoon intervened in the investigation into allegations surrounding his daughter's "fabricated credentials" during his tenure as Minister of Justice.
Senior spokesperson Park Sung-joon issued a commentary stating that in November 2022, when Han was serving as justice minister, police requested international mutual legal assistance from the United States to investigate the allegations concerning Han's daughter, but prosecutors rejected it, asking, "Did Lawmaker Han cover up his daughter's case?"
Senior spokesperson Park remarked, "The entire nation wonders why Han Dong-hoon's prosecution, which thoroughly scrutinized others' daughters, came to a halt when it came to Han Dong-hoon's daughter. Did the prosecution back down on its own, or did Minister Han exert pressure?"
He added, "This is the textbook example of double standards," demanding that Han and former head of the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office Song Kyung-ho explain the circumstances behind the halt of the investigation.
Floor spokesperson Lee Ju-hee also pointed out in a commentary today, "The prosecution blocked the way, and the police decided not to send the case for prosecution due to insufficient evidence. We cannot dismiss suspicions that the clearance of charges claimed by Han was not the conclusion of the investigation, but the result of obstructing it."
Floor spokesperson Lee emphasized, "Mutual legal assistance in criminal matters is a procedure that must pass through the Minister of Justice. If the police's request had been submitted to the Ministry of Justice, the person with final approval authority was none other than the father of the person under investigation."
She added, "This is why the term 'self-clearing' is emerging," demanding that Han clarify whether he had filed a conflict of interest report or requested recusal at the time, and that the Ministry of Justice explain the circumstances surrounding the rejection of the police's mutual legal assistance request.
Spokesperson Cho Gye-won also urged, "Lawmaker Han is 'turning a deaf ear' even though it was revealed during the Legislation and Judiciary Committee's parliamentary audit that prosecutors blocked the investigation into his daughter's credential-building allegations. It is common sense for Han, who was the justice minister at the time, to clarify to what extent he was involved in the investigation into allegations regarding his daughter's credentials."
