U.S. President Donald Trump stated on the 8th (local time) that anyone who uses the term artificial intelligence (AI) instead of super intelligence (SI)—a term he coined—will be considered an enemy.
President Trump wrote on his social media platform Truth Social that day, "The White House will consider anyone who uses the term 'Artificial Intelligence' instead of the widely accepted, new, and more accurate term 'Super Intelligence' as an enemy."
On September 29, President Trump signed an executive order requiring federal departments and agencies to use the term SI instead of AI in official documents.
President Trump has argued that the word "artificial" in AI fails to properly reflect the advanced state of the technology, and that SI should be used to signify extraordinarily superior intelligence.
During his summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping last month, President Trump also discussed the issue of changing the terminology from AI to SI.
While China has taken the stance of respecting the U.S. use of the term SI, it continues to use the term AI in public remarks and documents.
President Trump's policy to change the terminology has also failed to gain significant traction within the relevant U.S. industry, where the traditional term AI remains widely used.
