The reform of the Korea Football Association presidential election system, which was being pushed forward following recommendations from the K-Football Innovation Committee, has hit a roadblock.

A senior KFA official told SBS that FIFA and the AFC sent an official letter requesting that the association refrain from making related decisions until FIFA and the AFC finish their own review regarding the activities of the innovation committee.

Consequently, the KFA's plan to elect a new president through a vote on the 27th of next month has faced inevitable disruptions.

The core issue is whether there was undue government interference.

Previously, the government-launched innovation committee drew up a reform proposal to dramatically expand the existing presidential electoral college of around 200 members to approximately 20,000, and the KFA has been pushing to amend its articles of association based on this. FIFA is currently investigating whether there was pressure or undue government interference during this process.

In response, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism reaffirmed its existing stance, stating that the innovation committee is merely an advisory body and that the association is proceeding with the revisions autonomously, meaning there is no problem.
