▲ Marine Corps service members search for lost North Korean landmines
An antipersonnel landmine, presumed to have drifted from North Korea, has been found at a beach in Ganghwa-gun, Incheon.
At around 3:20 p.m. today (October 8), one antipersonnel landmine was discovered near Daebinchang Beach on Jumundo Island, Seodo-myeon, Ganghwa-gun.
A worker conducting environmental cleanup near the beach found the mine and reported it to the relevant authorities. Military authorities retrieved the landmine at the scene and disposed of it safely through a controlled detonation.
The landmine is presumed to have been washed down from North Korean territory due to heavy downpours during the summer season.
This marks the first time a landmine has been discovered in the island areas of Ganghwa-gun in 54 days since August 15.
As the Hangeul Day holiday weekend begins, Ganghwa-gun has issued emergency text alerts urging people to exercise extreme caution.
