President Lee Jae-myung said on Wednesday (October 7) that "the Green Transformation is a definitive future strategy that secures international competitiveness while protecting the lives and homes of the people from the climate crisis."
President Lee emphasized this during a briefing session he hosted on the Korean Green Transformation (K-GX) strategy and the private investment initiative dubbed the "K-GX Signature Project."
The Green Transformation refers to a national transition strategy to fundamentally overhaul energy, industrial, economic, and social structures into an eco-friendly and decarbonized framework to address the climate crisis and achieve carbon neutrality.
"The climate crisis is not an issue of the distant future, but a reality threatening human survival," President Lee said. "This year, heatwaves in Europe caused more than 35,000 additional deaths compared to normal years, and Nepal suffered a disaster with collapsing glaciers."
He continued, "We are no longer in a situation where we must abandon either the environment or economic growth. Carbon trade barriers, including Europe's carbon border tax, are rising by the day, and foreign companies are also strongly demanding carbon reductions."
President Lee added, "Preempting the green market is essential to maintaining the 'super-gap' lead of our nation's high-tech industries and to achieving the success of the three mega-projects."
He emphasized, "There is a saying, 'If you can't avoid it, enjoy it.' Moving away from the practice of being a fast-follower trailing behind others, we must now become the architects and leaders setting the stage ourselves in the green market," adding, "South Korea's innovation DNA will demonstrate its strength in the process of the Green Transformation."
