At the Cabinet meeting held at the Blue House this morning, the acting heads of the Prosecution Agency and the Major Crimes Investigation Agency—both launched on October 2 following the abolition of the Prosecutors' Office—attended side by side.
[Lee Jeong-hyeon / Acting Head of the Prosecution Agency (Deputy Chief Prosecutor): "We will do our utmost to ensure that the Prosecution Agency is established stably as early as possible..."]
[Jeon Jong-min / Acting Head of the Major Crimes Investigation Agency (Deputy Commissioner): "With both high public expectations and concerns regarding the Major Crimes Investigation Agency, I feel a heavy sense of responsibility."]
President Lee Jae-myung noted that in the past, excessive authority over investigation, indictment, and sustaining public prosecutions was concentrated in the prosecution, eventually leading to abuse, and evaluated the launch of the Prosecution Agency and the Major Crimes Investigation Agency as a "historic decision by the people."
[President Lee Jae-myung: "We must never allow investigative and prosecutorial powers to be abused or swayed by political power, or fail to fulfill their rightful responsibilities."]
President Lee remarked that citizens sometimes question "whether justice exists in this country," and directed the following message to the Major Crimes Investigation Agency:
[President Lee Jae-myung: "Regardless of sides, and regardless of ruling or opposition parties, I ask that you rigorously and thoroughly investigate, without the slightest hesitation, criminal offenses committed by powerful individuals—the so-called social elite who are highly educated and possess much."]
He also emphasized that the truth must be thoroughly uncovered in cases where the public harbors doubts, ensuring that no one suffers an injustice and no one gains unfair advantages in the process.
During the meeting, President Lee also addressed other pending issues.
Noting that public concern and anxiety are running very high over hacking incidents against financial institutions using artificial intelligence, he stressed the need to concentrate personnel and resources to fundamentally overhaul the cybersecurity paradigm.
He also announced plans to amass more than 1 trillion won for the Rural and Fishery Mutual Cooperation Fund and broaden the income safety net.
