Police have launched an investigation into allegations that Choi Seung-ho, leader of the Samsung Electronics chapter of the Samsung Group's supra-corporate labor union, contracted with his father-in-law's company for rally supplies.
The Nowon Police Station in Seoul, which was assigned the case, is summoning Kim Soon-hwan, secretary-general of the Citizens' Coalition for Democratic Society, who filed a complaint against Choi, to conduct a complainant interrogation this morning.
The civic group filed a complaint against Choi with the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency on September 10 on charges of breach of trust and obstruction of business.
In the complaint, the group claimed, "Despite the necessity to exclude family-run businesses and select suppliers in a fair and rational manner, these considerations were ignored, raising suspicions that work was funneled to the father-in-law's company."
Previously, internal suspicions arose within Samsung Electronics that Choi had placed an order for vests with his father-in-law's company during his activities with the joint struggle headquarters, sparking controversy over alleged preferential treatment for family.
When the suspicions emerged last month, Choi stated, "It is true that the representative of company A, which is under suspicion, is the union leader's father-in-law." However, he added, "The contract with company A was not intended to provide unfair profits to the union leader or his relatives, but was executed after comparing actual contract conditions such as pricing and delivery schedules at the time."
