The Romanian government announced that a fire broke out on a vessel within the country's exclusive economic zone (EEZ) in the Black Sea, resulting in two deaths.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy claimed that the vessel was targeted by a Russian drone attack.
According to the Associated Press on the 5th (local time), the Romanian Ministry of Internal Affairs reported that a fire broke out at around 11:00 a.m. that day on a commercial vessel approximately 30 nautical miles (55 km) south of Sfântu Gheorghe in Tulcea County, southeastern Romania, killing two people and leaving 11 crew members rescued.
The vessel subsequently sank.
The Romanian Ministry of Internal Affairs did not provide specific details regarding the cause of the fire.
Local broadcasters reported that the vessel was a Turkish ship transporting grain.
Regarding the incident, President Zelenskyy wrote on social media X, "Two Russian drones launched a horrific attack in neutral waters against a Turkish-owned civilian vessel carrying corn," adding that nationals of Azerbaijan and India were on board the ship.
He continued, "Ukraine has repeatedly proposed concrete measures to ease tensions and guarantee safety in the Black Sea, but Russia continues to choose terror and the sinking of civilian vessels instead of normal navigation," and urged that pressure is necessary to restore global food security.
