President Lee Jae-myung has ordered a thorough investigation and comprehensive countermeasures regarding recent personal data leaks caused by hacking attacks at multiple financial institutions, including major commercial banks.
Kang Yu-jung, senior spokesperson for the presidential office, said today (October 4), "President Lee was briefed on the recent personal data breaches and response measures across financial institutions and public agencies." She added that "he instructed officials to view the situation with the utmost gravity and make every effort to conduct a thorough investigation and establish countermeasures."
Anxiety has been mounting across the financial sector as data leaks and related damage have affected not only the banking sector—including Shinhan Bank, KB Kookmin Bank, Hana Bank, and BNK Busan Bank—but also non-banking firms such as Yegaram Savings Bank and Hyundai Capital.
The confirmed scale of personal information leaked so far exceeds 60,000 individuals.
Financial authorities are not ruling out the possibility that additional hacking attacks and data leaks could be uncovered in other sectors beyond the security incidents reported to date.
The Financial Services Commission will convene an emergency meeting this afternoon at the Government Complex Seoul, bringing together heads of all financial industry associations and the chief executive officers of financial institutions that sustained hacking damage.
The nation's top two financial regulators—Financial Services Commission Chairman Lee Eog-weon and Financial Supervisory Service Governor Lee Chan-jin—are scheduled to attend the meeting to review the status of the hacking incidents and discuss response measures.
With indications that artificial intelligence-based tools were employed in some of the cyberattacks, and as authorities have yet to confirm whether the breaches were carried out by the same hacker or group, participants are also expected to share comparative analyses of the attack techniques used against each financial institution during today's meeting.
