Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix finished today's regular trading session with gains of around 3%, boosted by favorable domestic and external factors such as Micron's strong earnings and robust semiconductor exports.
In the KOSPI market today, Samsung Electronics closed up 2.79% from the previous session at 276,000 won.
Starting 0.74% lower at 266,500 won, Samsung Electronics slipped as low as 264,500 won (-1.49%) right after the market opened, but subsequently showed a consistent upward trajectory.
SK Hynix closed up 3.21% from the previous session at 1,833,000 won.
SK Hynix also fell to as low as 1,749,000 won (-1.52%) right after the open before quickly recovering its losses and turning upward.
Micron's revenue for the fourth fiscal quarter (June to August), announced early this morning Korea time, reached $54.23 billion (approx. 73.5 trillion won), nearly five times the figure from the same period last year, setting a record high.
This was an earnings surprise that also exceeded the $51.07 billion estimate compiled by market research firm London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG).
The quarterly adjusted earnings per share (EPS) also came in at $33.42, surpassing Wall Street's expectation of $31.61.
However, stock prices briefly fluctuated in after-hours trading immediately following the earnings release.
This occurred because the "whispering number"—which refers to the higher bar expected by market participants apart from the consensus—was set at an even higher EPS of $34.14, and the gross margin guidance for the first quarter of fiscal 2027 stood at 86.25%, slightly below expectations (86.4%).
As a result, Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix started lower and lacked momentum in early trading, but the impact eased as interpretations emerged that Micron's lower gross margin guidance for the first quarter of fiscal 2027 was merely due to one-off factors such as incentives.
In particular, the fact that South Korea's exports continuously broke record highs, driven by semiconductor shortages, seemed to ignite investment sentiment.
Today, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced that September exports reached $120.94 billion, an 83.5% increase from the same period last year, marking the largest monthly exports ever.
The flagship semiconductor sector generated over $60 billion in performance, driving overall exports.
Meanwhile, in the KOSPI market, retail investors and foreign investors net sold 1.4306 trillion won and 544.2 billion won, respectively.
Institutional investors net bought 334.5 billion won.
In the KOSPI electrical and electronic sector, to which Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix belong, retail and foreign investors maintained a selling superiority of 1.7711 trillion won and 174.1 billion won, while institutions posted a buying superiority of 332.3 billion won.
Other corporations, which recently emerged as major supply-and-demand players due to the share buybacks of Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, net bought 1.6176 trillion won in the KOSPI electrical and electronic sector.
SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics ranked first and second in terms of net selling by foreigners today, but the scale of net selling itself appeared to have decreased significantly.
Foreigners net sold 214.5 billion won worth of SK Hynix and 202.7 billion won worth of Samsung Electronics.
