▲ Apology regarding the extension of early admissions application deadlines
It has been found that among the 100 universities that extended their early admissions application deadlines by one hour due to a system crash for the 2027 academic year college admissions, actual additional applications were received at 80 universities.
During the extended deadline period, a total of 3,184 additional applications were submitted to these universities, averaging about 1.8 applications per recruitment unit (admission type).
Among them, 2,329 cases, or 73%, had records showing that applicants were in the process of applying when the system error occurred, while the remaining 855 cases were instances where login itself was impossible, leaving no digital records.
The Ministry of Education released a press briefing today (the 30th) and disclosed the current status of application filings following the deadline extension for early admissions.
The Ministry of Education analyzed the application status after the deadline extension for the 2027 academic year early admissions based on data submitted by the application agency.
According to the analysis, when a system error occurred at UwayApply, a private agency, ahead of the early admissions deadline on the 11th, 100 out of a total of 116 universities extended their deadlines by one hour from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM.
Among them, actual additional applications were tallied at 80 universities, with a total of 3,184 additional applications received across 1,781 recruitment units.
This averages about 1.8 cases per recruitment unit.
Of the 3,184 additional applications, 2,329 cases, accounting for about 73%, had error records left while the applicants were in the middle of submitting their applications during the system crash.
The remaining 855 cases were instances where login itself was impossible due to the system error, leaving no digital records.
The average competition rate for the 80 universities that experienced additional applications due to the deadline extension increased by about 0.22%, going from 10.25-to-1 at the original deadline of 6:00 PM on the 11th to 10.27-to-1 at the actual deadline of 7:00 PM.
The average competition rate for the 1,781 recruitment units where additional applications occurred rose by about 0.74%, from 13.66-to-1 to 13.76-to-1.
According to the Ministry of Education, the majority (69.8%) of recruitment units had one additional application, while recruitment units with 10 or more were concentrated in essay and practical skill-focused admissions, which initially had high competition rates.
In particular, recruitment units at 17 universities that disclosed their final competition rates during the deadline extension period all saw two or fewer additional applications.
A total of 39 applications were additionally submitted across 35 recruitment units.
The Ministry of Education stated that final competition rates, including additional applications resulting from the deadline extension and applications confirmed for post-hoc remedy, can be checked through individual university websites or application sites.
The Ministry of Education has decided to extend the special investigation period (from the 16th to the 23rd) into UwayApply, the application agency responsible for this early admissions system crash.
The Ministry of Education stated, "Future additional investigation schedules and plans will be established based on the analysis of the first-round investigation results," adding, "Depending on the investigation results, we plan to clarify the causes and assignment of responsibility and derive comprehensive improvement measures."
In addition, the Ministry of Education plans to operate a joint task force (TF) starting today with the Korean Council for University Education (KCUE) and two private agencies (UwayApply and Jinhak Apply).
Through this TF, the Ministry of Education plans to thoroughly review the overall service operation systems of private agencies from scratch and establish preparedness systems (such as manuals, communication systems, and mock drills) to cope with service disruptions.
