A man in his 60s who was put on trial for hurling insults and committing assault against police officers responding to a report about an intoxicated person has received a suspended prison sentence in the first trial.
Judge Seo Young-hyo of Criminal Division 11 at the Seoul Northern District Court sentenced the man, surnamed Lee, to six months in prison with two years of probation last month.
At around 9:00 PM on August 8 of last year, a 112 emergency report was filed stating that an intoxicated person had collapsed on a street in Bomun-dong, Seongbuk-gu, Seoul.
At the time, Lee, who was drunk, refused to comply with requests from the responding police officers to go home, shouting insults such as, "You trash," and "You are totally the mutts of Yoon Suk Yeol."
When police officer A, who was dispatched to the scene, repeatedly advised him to return home, Lee reportedly grabbed officer A's wrist tightly and struck officer A's abdomen two to three times with the back of his hand.
During the trial, Lee claimed that he had never struck the police officer's abdomen, but the court rejected his argument.
The court explained its sentencing reasoning, stating, "We comprehensively considered the facts that Lee is reflecting on his actions themselves, has no prior record of the same kind of offense, and that the degree of damage was not severe."
