Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon responded positively on the 30th to remarks made the previous day (the 29th) by Democratic Party leader Kim Min-seok, who expressed a willingness to cooperate by stating, "We are not blindly opposing Mayor Oh's administration."
Speaking at the breakfast policy consultation meeting between the Seoul Metropolitan Government and the People Power Party's Seoul chapter held at Seoul City Hall this morning (the 30th), Mayor Oh said, "Based on what was publicly announced, news reports included remarks from leader Kim Min-seok implying that their goal is not to hold back Mayor Oh, and that while it may not amount to critical support, they intend to help."
Mayor Oh added, "Fortunately, there were also remarks to the effect of 'Isn't it inevitable that the garden project will continue even if the mayor changes?' Regarding the issue of building youth rental housing in Yongsan, seeing the news that they have shifted to a 'prudent stance' after visiting Yongsan Park—albeit late—brings a sense of relief."
He noted that despite facing a difficult situation after the Democratic Party secured a majority of district heads and city council seats in Seoul during the June 3 local elections, he evaluates yesterday's response from the Democratic Party as a truly meaningful change.
He continued, "While our party, the People Power Party, has many issues where we must draw battle lines at the national politics level, I hope that at the city administration level, bipartisan cooperation can be achieved to serve as a foundation for improving the quality of life for Seoul citizens."
Cho Eun-hee, who was recently elected as the chairperson of the People Power Party's Seoul chapter, stated, "It would be good for the city to support Mayor Oh so that he can perform well even though the city council is dominated by the opposition. For instance, the youth AI budget was cut by the opposition-majority city council, and I hope we can make Seoul a place where young people are not sacrificed to political strife."
Supreme Council member Shin Dong-wook said, "As the government's missteps have had a significant negative impact in Seoul, I hope Mayor Oh will break through legal risks to wrap up these issues. No matter what political situation unfolds, I hope Seoul will unite around the mayor to help out-of-parliament district committee chairs enter the legislature, and arrange frequent consultation meetings whenever important matters arise."
