Inconveniences caused by electric scooters in crowded pedestrian areas have been an ongoing issue for quite some time.
Starting today (September 30), Seoul's "Scooter-Free Zones" are expanding further. Have you heard of scooter-free zones?
These are areas where the operation of electric scooters is restricted in academy districts and commercial areas heavily frequented by pedestrians.
Previously, Hongdae Red Road and the academy district in Banpo were designated as such zones.
In addition to these, the Daechi-dong academy district, the Wirye Transit Mall pedestrian walkway, and the Yeonsinnae Rodeo Street have been newly designated as scooter-free zones, bringing the total number of locations in Seoul to five.
Operating hours vary by location.
Scooter traffic is prohibited from 12:00 PM to 11:00 PM in the Daechi-dong academy district, from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM on Yeonsinnae Rodeo Street, and all day long on the Wirye Transit Mall pedestrian walkway.
Violating the transit ban can result in a fine of 30,000 won and 15 penalty points based on general road standards.
