Cheong Wa Dae stated that "nothing has been decided yet" regarding plans to request a parliamentary confirmation hearing for Kim Ji-yong, the nominee to head the Serious Crimes Investigation Agency.
Meeting with reporters on Tuesday, Kang Yu-jung, senior spokesperson for Cheong Wa Dae, gave this response when asked when a decision would likely be made on requesting a confirmation hearing for the nominee, saying, "I think we will have to wait and see a little more".
Earlier on September 7, Minister of the Interior and Safety Yoon Ho-jung recommended Kim for the appointment, and Cheong Wa Dae said at the time that President Lee would soon submit a confirmation hearing request to the National Assembly.
However, opposition to the nominee subsequently mounted, primarily among hardline supporters, prompting President Lee to order additional vetting.
Currently, weight is leaning toward speculation that President Lee will proceed with the confirmation hearing request for Kim as planned, but pushback from hardline lawmakers within the ruling Democratic Party still persists.
