President Lee Jae-myung emphasized the need to develop and deploy cutting-edge weapon systems, describing the construction of nuclear-powered submarines and the development of hypersonic missiles as "key to self-reliant defense."
Presiding over the 42nd cabinet meeting at the Blue House today (September 29), President Lee said, "Strong national defense capabilities are a core pillar for safeguarding national interests," adding, "We must speed up the construction of nuclear submarines and the advancement of missile technologies, such as hypersonic missiles, which are key to self-reliant defense."
He continued, "To build an airtight defense across the sky, land, sea, and even space with our own independent technology, we must continue to develop and operationalize state-of-the-art weapon systems," adding, "Beyond fighting and winning, we must steadily sustain efforts to build true peace where there is no need to fight."
President Lee also noted, "The KF-21, the first fighter aircraft built by our own hands, was officially delivered to the Air Force last week. Only eight nations worldwide, including us, have succeeded in independently developing a 4.5-generation fighter jet, which represents the culmination of South Korea's advanced technology," elaborating that "this holds special significance in terms of self-reliant defense."
