An estimated 315,000 people, including returning visitors and travelers, used domestic coastal ferry services during the recent Chuseok holiday period.
The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries announced on the 29th that it safely transported 315,000 passengers and 65,000 vehicles without major accidents during the special coastal ferry traffic management period (September 23 to 27) implemented for the holiday.
The passenger volume fell short of half of the 780,000 coastal ferry users recorded during last year's special traffic management period (October 2 to 12), which featured a longer Chuseok holiday.
The daily average number of passengers also stood at 63,000, representing a slight decrease compared to last year (70,000).
The day with the highest number of coastal ferry users was the 24th, when Chuseok return trips peaked, with approximately 80,000 people boarding the ships.
Ahead of the special traffic management, the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries conducted a joint special inspection involving relevant agencies targeting 143 coastal passenger ships nationwide from August 31 to September 11, identifying and correcting 373 risk factors.
In addition, parking fees were waived at five state-operated passenger terminals, and temporary parking lots with a capacity for 760 vehicles were additionally secured at six locations experiencing parking congestion.
