President Lee Jae-myung highlighted improvements to the income eligibility criteria for the Bogeumjari Loan for newlyweds, which had been criticized as a representative "marriage penalty," emphasizing that "national policy must not become a barrier that makes marriage seem like a disadvantage and causes people to hesitate."
Early this morning (September 29), President Lee shared an article on his social media along with a post titled "Disadvantage if you marry? Not anymore." The article reported that the Korea Housing Finance Corporation (HF) decided to improve its policy so that newlywed couples can use the Bogeumjari Loan if either spouse earns an annual income of 70 million won or less, even if their combined household income exceeds the previous limit.
Following persistent concerns that some couples were delaying their marriage registration due to mortgage eligibility conditions, the government announced in August that it would resolve the "marriage penalty" of the Bogeumjari Loan.
President Lee stated, "The irrational loan policy, which was cited as a representative marriage penalty, has now been rectified," promising, "We will identify every single irrational system and practice in the daily lives of the public and continue to correct them."
