The on-site investigation into the landmine explosion on the western front concluded today (September 28). The military announced interim findings stating there is a very high probability that the detonated landmines were laid by the North Korean military. Six days after the landmine explosion occurred on the western front, the on-site investigation that began yesterday wrapped up today.
The Joint Chiefs of Staff is currently briefing on the results of the on-site investigation right now from the briefing room inside the Ministry of National Defense building, where I am currently standing.
The military first explained that the location of the mine blast was about 10 meters from the Military Demarcation Line, and about 10 meters from an area where the terrain had been altered due to recent landmine planting by the North Korean military.
A total of two landmines detonated, and one unexploded mine was discovered 1 meter away from the blast site. The military stated that an initial analysis by the National Forensic Service detected traces of TNT and a brown foreign substance on the injured soldiers' gear.
Considering the shape of the blast crater, statements regarding the fire at the time, and the extent of injuries, the military explained that the cause of the explosion was not South Korean mines.
The military also stated that there is a very high probability that they were North Korean mines, citing the fact that South Korean forces have no record of laying landmines in this area, traces of North Korean troops laying mines nearby in September of last year, and testimonies from South Korean soldiers stating that "it was similar in shape to North Korean wooden-box landmines, and the material appeared to be plastic."
The military stressed that if they are confirmed to be North Korean mines, all responsibility lies with North Korea, and appropriate and corresponding measures will be taken.
Around 40 personnel were mobilized for the two-day on-site investigation, including South Korean military operational forces, the United Nations Command Military Armistice Commission, and investigative agency officials.
