Chinese state media evaluated the agreement reached at the summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping as a "historical achievement" and urged the U.S. side to implement the agreement.
In an editorial published on the 28th titled "The Significant Signal Sent by the Eight-Point Agreement Between China and the U.S.," the state-run Global Times argued, "The two major powers have sent a positive signal that they are moving in the same direction, pursuing peaceful coexistence and mutually beneficial win-win cooperation."
The eight-point agreement, released by the Chinese Foreign Ministry on the 26th in the form of a summit fact sheet, includes the establishment of a "constructive and strategic stability relationship based on respect, fairness, and equality," mutual tariff reductions amounting to 30 billion dollars (approx. 40.8 trillion KRW), anti-narcotics cooperation, and the establishment of artificial intelligence (AI) dialogue and communication channels for AI-related accidents.
It also included mutual support for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit and the Group of 20 (G20) summit, as well as the leasing of giant pandas.
The newspaper cited the agreement between the two countries to build a "constructive and strategic stability relationship based on respect, fairness, and equality" as a major political achievement of this summit.
It explained that "respect" means respecting each other's sovereignty, territorial integrity, social system, development path, core interests, and major concerns, while "fairness" means not pursuing unilateral absolute dominance.
Regarding "equality," it argued, "The sovereignty of both countries is equal, neither acts coercively, and each other's concerns are treated equally."
Mentioning mutual tariff reductions and joint investigations into new types of narcotics, the newspaper evaluated, "It has been proven that China and the U.S. can accomplish a series of major tasks through cooperation."
Regarding the agreement by the two leaders to mutually support the hosting of the APEC and G20 summits, it gave significance to the move, stating it demonstrates the will to strengthen cooperation in multilateral mechanisms and jointly promote stability and development.
However, the newspaper pressured the U.S. side to implement the agreement, emphasizing that the consensus between the leaders must lead to actual actions.
The Global Times, an English-language media outlet affiliated with the Global Times newspaper, stated, "Agreements must be backed by concrete actions," adding, "It remains to be seen whether the U.S. will translate its commitments into actual actions on core agendas such as tariffs, technology controls, and the Taiwan question."
It continued, "Ministries, sectors, and institutions at all levels of both countries must faithfully implement the consensus reached by the leaders," and argued, "We must turn into reality the vision that 'cooperation should be prioritized, competition should be restrained, differences should be managed, and peace should be anticipated.'"
