The bereaved family of the late Lee Chae-won held a one-person protest in front of the Gwangju District Court this morning (the 28th), holding a sign that read, "Your Honor, please answer with the death penalty for the murderer Chang Yoon-ki."
The bereaved family continued the one-person protest for about 30 minutes during the morning commute hours and additionally submitted a petition to the court demanding the maximum legal sentence for Chang.
The petition contains a cumulative total of 99,342 signatures, including approximately 50,000 collected during last month's sentencing hearing.
The age groups of those who agreed to the petition were led by those in their 20s (45.02%), followed by teenagers (27.05%), and those in their 30s (15.35%).
The bereaved family plans to hold another one-person protest tomorrow (the 29th) and make a public statement before and after the trial on the 30th, the day of Chang Yoon-ki's first-trial sentencing hearing.
The Gwangju-Jeonnam Memorial Alliance, which is supporting the bereaved family, issued a press release stating, "Nearly 100,000 citizens are speaking with one voice to urge a stern punishment for Chang Yoon-ki," adding, "We ask the court to set social justice straight by holding him strictly accountable for his premeditated and brutal crime."
Chang Yoon-ki was indicted and detained on charges of murdering Lee on a secluded pedestrian walkway in Wolgye-dong, Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju, around 12:10 a.m. on May 5, and swinging a weapon at a male student who rushed over after hearing screams.
Prosecutors, who indicted Chang on charges including "rape and murder" under the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Punishment, etc. of Sexual Crimes, demanded the death penalty during the sentencing hearing on the 31st of last month.
