▲ Fire at a villa in Yangju
A fire, suspected to be arson, broke out at a villa in Deokgye-dong, Yangju, Gyeonggi Province, leaving one resident dead and six people injured, including police officers and firefighters.
According to police and fire authorities, a report was received at around 1:20 p.m. today stating that an intoxicated resident appeared to be pouring gasoline at a third-floor unit of a villa in Deokgye-dong, Yangju.
As police officers arrived and attempted to check the unit on the third floor, an explosion suddenly occurred, followed by flames that spread throughout the entire building.
After 119 rescue workers brought the fire under control in about 50 minutes and searched the interior, a man in his 60s identified as resident A was found burned to death inside the home.
A total of six people were injured due to the sudden explosion and fire, including four police officers, one firefighter, and one resident. Their injuries are reportedly not life-threatening.
Police and fire authorities are investigating the cause of the fire, focusing on the possibility of arson.
