A vessel traveling from Tanzania to the Democratic Republic of the Congo capsized on Lake Tanganyika on the 24th local time, resulting in at least 41 deaths, according to the provincial government of the DRC.
According to the Associated Press, Norris Mulongoy, the transport minister for Tanganyika Province in the DRC, stated that about 100 people were on board the vessel.
He explained that 49 people have been rescued so far, and search operations are underway to find the remaining passengers.
The vessel reportedly capsized while en route from Kigoma, Tanzania, to Kalemie in Tanganyika Province, DRC.
Lake Tanganyika, which stretches approximately 670 kilometers from north to south, borders Burundi and Zambia in addition to Tanzania and the DRC, and is the world's second-deepest lake after Lake Baikal in Russia.
