U.S. President Donald Trump emphasized his commitment to accelerating artificial intelligence development, stating that the AI issue will be a major agenda item at his summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping on the 24th local time.
President Trump wrote on social media Truth Social that morning, "An important day with President Xi," adding, "Super intelligence will be a major topic of discussion."
"However, I want to leave this matter as it is," President Trump stated, adding, "China shares the same position."
This is interpreted as a signal that he will not stop accelerating AI development, even as the U.S. AI industry raises alarm bells and calls for slowing down, warning that rapidly advancing AI could lead to human extinction if left out of control.
President Trump has previously expressed this stance by emphasizing that whoever wins in AI will emerge victorious in the global hegemony competition.
Regarding AI safety issues, President Trump stated, "Our safeguard is the Department of Justice," making it clear that agencies under the Justice Department, such as the Federal Bureau of Investigation, will launch investigations and punishments if AI-related issues arise.
Previously, U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche dismissed current AI controversies during a White House briefing on the 15th as an attempt to influence the U.S. midterm elections in November, stating, "Anyone who violates criminal law regarding AI, we will investigate."
