President Lee Jae-myung, having concluded his schedule at the United Nations General Assembly and departed from New York, arrived in Mexico City on the afternoon of the 23rd, local time.
The visit was arranged at the invitation of Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and marks the first state visit by a South Korean president in 16 years.
As his first scheduled event the following day, President Lee will lay a wreath at the Monument to the Heroic Cadets and attend the official welcoming ceremony at the National Palace.
He will subsequently hold back-to-back events with President Sheinbaum, including a summit, an expanded meeting, a memorandum of understanding (MOU) exchange ceremony, a luncheon, and a joint press briefing.
On the 25th, he will attend a business forum held at the World Trade Center in Mexico City and visit the K-Expo venue before heading back to South Korea on the 26th.
Wi Sung-lac, Director of the National Security Office, explained in a prior briefing that "this visit will strengthen practical cooperation with Mexico in the areas of trade, investment, and supply chains."
He noted that, particularly as Mexico pursues military modernization projects, possibilities for cooperation leveraging South Korea's defense industry could also be discussed.
Assessing that "Mexico is a core consumer market for K-content" in the cultural sector as well, Director Wi stated, "We will prepare for this visit to serve as a firm milestone for the mutual prosperity of both countries."
