A man in his 40s who assaulted his father for telling him to quit drinking and get a job, and who forced his son to endure harsh treatment, has received a suspended prison sentence.
The Chuncheon District Court announced today (September 24) that it sentenced A, a man in his 40s indicted on charges including child abuse, assault against an ascendant, and obstruction of official duties, to 1 year and 6 months in prison, suspended for 4 years.
The court also ordered probation and 40 hours of lectures on preventing the recurrence of child abuse.
A is accused of flying into a rage in July at his home in Chuncheon when his father said, "Stop drinking so much and find a job quickly. Get your act together," hurling profanities and punching him in the face.
Shortly afterward, A called his son into a room and ordered him to sing a song. When the son refused, A threatened him as if to strike him with a plastic soju bottle and yelled at him to assume the "headstand" position, a notorious form of corporal punishment.
When the son refused to comply with this as well, A reportedly assaulted him by throwing a mobile phone at him.
Furthermore, when police officers arrived following a report by the son and demanded A leave the premises to separate the family from domestic violence, A refused to comply and headbutted one of the officers.
The court reprimanded A, stating, "The nature of the crime is poor, such as assaulting his father and forcing his son to assume the headstand position. He also has a previous record of punishment for obstructing official duties and has been referred to child protection proceedings twice for violations of the Child Welfare Act regarding the victimized child."
However, the court explained the reasoning behind its sentencing, taking into consideration that "he is reflecting on his crimes and has firmly promised not to reoffend through treatment for alcoholism."
