South Korean men's tennis has reached the Davis Cup Final 8 stage for the first time, where it will face defending champion Italy, anchored by world No. 1 Jannik Sinner.
The matchup was set during the draw for the 2026 Davis Cup Final 8 held on the 22nd (local time) at Palazzo Pepoli in Bologna, Italy.
Italy, ranked No. 1 in the national rankings, and Spain, ranked No. 2, automatically received the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds, respectively, while Czechia and Germany were assigned the No. 3 and No. 4 seeds through a draw.
In the subsequent random draw for unseeded nations, South Korea was drawn first, setting up its match against Italy.
The remaining matchups were set as Czechia versus Canada, Great Britain versus Germany, and Spain versus Austria.
The quarterfinals between South Korea and Italy will take place at 11:00 PM on November 25, Korean time.
Italy is the powerhouse of men's tennis, holding the No. 1 spot in the national rankings.
Having first competed in the Davis Cup in 1922, Italy has won the tournament four times in total, achieving a three-peat from 2023 through last year.
Last year, the team claimed the title by sweeping Austria in the quarterfinals, Belgium in the semifinals, and Spain in the final with 2-0 victories in all matches.
At the time, they triumphed without ATP Tour world No. 1 Sinner, instead relying on Flavio Cobolli (No. 7) and Matteo Berrettini (No. 43).
Beyond them, Italy boasts eight players in the top 100 of the world rankings, including Luciano Darderi (No. 20), Lorenzo Musetti (No. 24), and Matteo Arnaldi (No. 37), alongside doubles pairs ranked No. 11 and No. 12 in the world, showcasing top-tier strength across all categories.
South Korea has reached the quarterfinals for the first time in 66 years since its debut in the Davis Cup in 1960.
The team wrote a new chapter in history by defeating India 3-1 in the second round of the World Group qualifiers held at home on the 18th and 19th, spearheaded by Kwon Soon-woo (Chungnam Sports Council), who single-handedly secured two singles wins.
Jeong Jong-sam, head coach of the South Korean national team, said, "Italy is a powerhouse that has achieved a three-peat in the Davis Cup, but our players are showing strong determination and confidence, refusing to be discouraged no matter who the opponent is."
This year's Final 8 will be held at the 10,000-seat SuperTennis Arena in Bologna.
It is an indoor hard-court venue.
From the quarterfinals to the final, ties will be played as single-elimination matches consisting of two singles and one doubles match, with the first country to secure two wins advancing.
A tiebreak applies at 6 games in all three sets.
Meanwhile, South Korea moved up two spots to No. 14 in the national rankings released on the 21st.
It is the highest ranking among Asian nations.
