President Lee Jae-myung, who visited New York to attend the United Nations General Assembly, held a summit with U.S. President Donald Trump on the evening of September 22, local time.
Wi Sung-lac, director of the National Security Office at Cheong Wa Dae, announced at the Korea Press Center set up in New York, "The leaders of South Korea and the United States held talks for about 30 minutes starting at 7:20 p.m. today."
He added, "During the meeting, the two leaders welcomed the significant progress made in recent discussions on investment projects between the two nations."
The summit was reportedly arranged dramatically after an agreement was reached today, local time.
President Trump reportedly allocated his final scheduled slot for the meeting and moved together with President Lee to a reception venue after the talks.
Based on the joint fact sheet agreed upon during the South Korea-U.S. summit in November of last year, the two leaders reaffirmed their shared commitment to deepening bilateral cooperation in areas such as nuclear submarine fuel, uranium enrichment and spent fuel reprocessing, shipbuilding cooperation, and the transfer of wartime operational control (OPCON), and agreed to pursue follow-up consultations.
Wi explained that President Trump, in particular, reaffirmed his willingness to engage in dialogue with North Korea, and the two leaders agreed to maintain close communication as "peacemakers and pacemakers" to open the door to dialogue with North Korea and establish peace on the Korean Peninsula.
In addition, President Lee noted that the U.S.-China summit scheduled for the following day is crucial for regional affairs, including South Korea-China relations, and wished for its success.
A senior Cheong Wa Dae official stated that President Lee, in particular, provided extensive explanations regarding the issue of wartime operational control transfer.
