A tenant in his 70s has been arrested by police after breaking through a window during the early morning hours, attacking a sleeping landlord and his mother with a weapon, and attempting to set fire to the residence.
The Daejeon Jungbu Police Station has requested an arrest warrant for a man in his 70s, identified as A, on charges including attempted murder, special trespassing, attempted arson of an inhabited building, and special obstruction of official duties.
A is accused of breaking into a second-floor window of a multi-family housing unit in Jung-gu, Daejeon, at around 3:00 a.m. on September 22 and wielding a weapon against a landlord in his 50s, surnamed B, and his 70s mother, surnamed C.
Due to the attack, the son in his 50s underwent surgery and is in critical condition, while the mother in his 70s is reportedly not in life-threatening condition.
A also sprayed flammable substances using a prepared spray bottle and attempted to ignite them with a lighter.
Subsequently, when police arrived at the scene, he resisted them using a flamethrower-like device before being shot with a Taser and arrested at the scene.
It was revealed that A, who rented a unit on the first floor of the building owned by the victims, committed the crime while under the delusion that "the upstairs landlord poured an unidentified liquid that got mixed into what I eat, causing me to lose my sight."
It was confirmed that in April of this year, A had filed a petition against the victim regarding the same claims, but police concluded the case after determining that the allegations did not match the facts.
Police are currently investigating the specific motives behind the crime by questioning A.
