There is a company that posted a recruitment notice stating "Chinese compatriots welcomed."
It is none other than the taxi industry.
As it has become increasingly difficult to find drivers, the industry appears to be turning to foreign recruitment.
Recently, a corporate taxi company in Seoul posted a driver recruitment notice in Chinese on an online job-seeking platform.
The notice stated that the average monthly income is 3 to 4 million won, and explained that among Chinese nationals, those holding overseas Korean (F-4) or permanent residency (F-5) visas are eligible to apply.
The company reportedly stated that due to labor shortages driven by an aging workforce, they are recruiting Chinese drivers who are proficient in Korean, adding that foreigners account for 20 percent of all applicants.
In fact, the number of corporate taxi drivers nationwide has plummeted by more than 30 percent over the past 10 years.
On the other hand, the number of foreign drivers has more than doubled.
As the work is relatively demanding while wages remain comparatively low, Korean drivers have been leaving the industry.
Analysts suggest that foreigners previously working in the construction or manufacturing sectors are now filling those vacancies.
The taxi industry maintains that it has no other choice given the aging population and severe labor shortages.
