President Lee Jae-myung and his spouse, First Lady Kim Hye-kyung, who visited New York to attend the United Nations General Assembly, visited Koreatown to meet with the Korean diaspora and engage with local citizens.
On the evening of September 21, local time, President Lee and First Lady Kim visited Koreatown in Midtown Manhattan, New York, accompanied by South Korean Ambassador to the United Nations Cha Ji-hoon and other officials.
Local citizens and tourists recognized the presidential couple, greeting them with shouts of "South Korea's President!" and "Mr. President," while some took commemorative photos with them.
In particular, a Korean student studying at the Culinary Institute of America (CIA) warmly welcomed the president, asking, "Aren't you the president?" and saying, "I should send this photo to my parents in Korea," according to Cheong Wa Dae Deputy Spokesperson Ahn Gwi-ryeong.
The presidential couple visited The Kunjip, a Korean restaurant in Koreatown, and had a Korean dinner.
Deputy Spokesperson Ahn stated, "Ahead of Chuseok, this visit to Koreatown was a meaningful time to share warm greetings with compatriots who have put down roots in an unfamiliar land and built the Korean community, as well as to witness firsthand the stature of Korean culture woven into the daily life of New York."
