▲ Crackdown on online vendors of Chuseok festive foods
The Gyeonggi Special Judicial Police announced that it conducted on-site inspections of 400 online sellers offering festive foods for Chuseok across the province from August 31 to September 16, catching 29 businesses committing 32 illegal acts.
By type of violation, there were 9 cases of "violations of business operators' compliance matters," 7 cases of "storing products past their consumption expiration dates," 7 cases of "violations of self-quality inspection obligations," 4 cases of "failure to report changes in business establishment area," 2 cases of "violations of preservation standards," and 1 case of "false labeling of origin."
One company was found to have used U.S.-sourced alcohol as an ingredient in raw ramen noodles while falsely labeling it as domestic origin before selling it.
Another business was investigated for storing 185 kg of red pepper powder with a consumption expiration date that had passed by 20 months without any markings indicating it was for "disposal."
Under the Act on the Labeling of Origin of Agricultural and Fishery Products, falsely labeling the origin of goods can result in up to 7 years in prison or a fine of up to 100 million KRW.
In addition, storing products past their expiration dates without educational or disposal markings, or failing to comply with refrigerated and frozen storage standards for livestock products, can lead to up to 3 years in prison or a fine of up to 30 million KRW under the Food Sanitation Act and the Livestock Products Sanitary Control Act.
