The Chinese Communist Party has decided to convene a plenary session of the Party Central Committee next month.
The Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee held a meeting presided over by General Secretary Xi Jinping and decided to hold the Fifth Plenary Session of the 20th Central Committee (20th CPC 5th Plenary Session) in Beijing from October 26 to 29.
Referred to as the CPC Central Committee or the Party Central, China's highest power-holding body is composed of 205 central committee members including General Secretary Xi Jinping, and convenes plenary sessions once or twice a year.
These plenary sessions of the Central Committee are abbreviated as plenary sessions.
The plenary sessions discuss major national policy directions and personnel matters for high-ranking positions in the party, government, and military.
There are observations that the upcoming 20th 5th Plenary Session will focus on political and ideological "readjustment" within the party ahead of next year's party congress, which will determine whether a fourth term for Xi Jinping is launched.
Projections also suggest that personnel actions regarding high-ranking officials who have recently fallen from power in successive anti-corruption purges could be taken through this 20th 5th Plenary Session.
When high-ranking officials who hold positions as members of the Party Central Committee are implicated in major incidents such as corruption and fall from power, the Central Committee plays the role of finally ratifying disciplinary actions against them.
Hong Kong and Taiwanese media outlets have raised expectations that there could be a replacement of 30 to 40 party central committee members, including military personnel.
