South Korea's benchmark stock market heavyweights Samsung Electronics surged by about 5% today (Sept. 21).

In the main bourse, the Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI), Samsung Electronics closed up 4.98% from the previous session at 274,000 won.

Starting the session up 1.15% at 264,000 won, Samsung Electronics steadily expanded its gains, briefly touching 275,000 won (+5.36%) during trading.

This marks the first time in 10 trading sessions that Samsung Electronics' closing price has crossed the 270,000-won threshold since the 7th of this month (270,000 won).

SK Hynix finished up 0.59% from the previous session at 1,868,000 won.

Shortly after the market opened, it soared up to 1,888,000 (+1.67%), but later fluctuated and gave up some of its gains.

On the 18th, the final trading day of last week, Wall Street closed mixed across the three major stock indices.

While the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.18%, the S&P 500 and the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite rose 0.17% and 0.39%, respectively.

However, major semiconductor stocks such as NVIDIA (+1.34%), Broadcom (+2.97%), AMD (+2.70%), and Micron (+3.92%) showed strength. Following a 3.14% jump the previous day, the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index surged another 2.78%, extending its sharp rally for a second consecutive day.

With no major events occurring over the weekend that could significantly impact the market, the strong upward trend appeared to carry over into domestic large-cap semiconductor stocks.

Additionally, upward pressure was reinforced by data released today by the Korea Customs Service, showing that South Korea's exports for the first 20 days of September (tentative customs clearance figures) reached $71.4 billion, a 78.3% increase compared to the same period last year. In particular, semiconductor exports broke all-time records, surging 259.4% to $34.12 billion.

Meanwhile, in the main stock market, retail investors and foreign investors net sold 2,978.9 billion won and 160.2 billion won, respectively.

Institutional investors were tallied as net buyers, acquiring 1,492.3 billion won.

In the KOSPI electrical and electronic sector—to which Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix belong—retail investors alone were net sellers at 3,208.4 billion won, while foreign and institutional investors maintained a buying advantage with 189.0 billion won and 1,397.1 billion won, respectively.

Other corporations, which have recently emerged as key supply-and-demand players due to large-scale treasury stock buybacks by Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, net bought 1,636.0 billion won.

Meanwhile, Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix ranked first among foreign investors' top net-bought and top net-sold stocks for the day, respectively.

Foreign investors net bought 1,071.5 billion won worth of Samsung Electronics shares, while net selling 812.1 billion won worth of SK Hynix.
