The Marine Corps conducted live-fire maritime drills on northwestern border islands near the Northern Limit Line (NLL) in the Yellow Sea on Monday (September 21).
According to the Northwestern Islands Defense Command, the 6th Marine Brigade stationed on Baengnyeong Island and the Yeonpyeong Unit stationed on Yeonpyeong Island conducted live-fire maritime training this afternoon.
Unit-assigned weapons, including K9 self-propelled howitzers and Chunmoo multiple rocket launcher systems, participated in the drills, firing around 200 rounds at simulated targets at sea.
The Marine Corps stated, "This exercise is a routine and defensive drill conducted in our maritime territory south of the NLL, involving unit-assigned weapons such as Chunmoo and K9 self-propelled howitzers."
This marks the third live-fire maritime drill held in the northwestern border island region this year, following drills in February and July.
The maritime live-fire drills on the northwestern border islands, which used to be conducted three to four times a year, were halted under the September 19 Inter-Korean Military Agreement signed in 2018. They resumed after the Yoon Suk Yeol administration fully suspended the September 19 military agreement in June 2024.
