President Lee Jae-myung presented a letter of appointment to Supreme Court Justice Kim Sung-soo (57, 24th class of the Judicial Research and Training Institute) at the main building of the Blue House today (September 21), Senior Blue House Spokesperson Kang Yu-jung announced.
Justice Kim is the first Supreme Court justice to take office since the launch of the Lee Jae-myung administration.
President Lee also conferred a national decoration on Kim's predecessor, former Supreme Court Justice Lee Heung-koo.
Supreme Court Chief Justice Cho Hee-dae, who has been at odds with the Blue House over the re-recommendation of a Supreme Court justice nominee, also attended the ceremony for the appointment letter and decoration.
Following the ceremony, President Lee had tea with Chief Justice Cho, Justice Kim, and former Justice Lee, according to Senior Spokesperson Kang.
Earlier on August 18, Chief Justice Cho formally recommended Kim in writing to President Lee to succeed former Justice Lee, while recommending Son Bong-ki, a senior judge at the Daegu District Court, to succeed former Justice Noh Tae-ak.
Regarding Senior Judge Son, the Blue House requested a re-recommendation on August 28, calling it "a unilateral written recommendation made without any substantive consultation," and the Supreme Court has not yet issued any particular position.
