US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng met in New York on the 20th local time to coordinate key agenda items for the upcoming summit scheduled for the 24th, including trade and artificial intelligence (AI).
According to Reuters, Bloomberg, and other outlets, Secretary Bessent met with reporters after finishing the meeting with the Chinese delegation at the JPMorgan Chase headquarters in Manhattan that afternoon, stating, "We had very successful discussions with the Chinese side on trade and AI."
Bessent shared that he proposed establishing a mutual notification system to the Chinese side, and added that both sides agreed to continue their dialogue on AI.
While noting that the two sides agreed to meet again, he did not elaborate on further details.
Jamieson Greer, the US Trade Representative (USTR) who also participated in the meeting, stated that the two countries activated a trade committee following this encounter.
He explained that items likely to be brought to the trade committee discussions could include consumer goods and low-technology items from the Chinese side, and energy products and agricultural goods from the US side.
The US and China previously agreed to form a trade committee during the summit in Beijing last May.
The trade committee is a consultative body tasked with discussing tariff reductions on 30 billion dollars' worth of non-sensitive goods from each other, even as both countries exchange high-tariff battles.
Vice Premier He did not issue a separate statement to reporters as he left the meeting.
This high-level meeting served as a final negotiation session between the economic chiefs of both countries ahead of the summit between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, which will be held at the White House in Washington, D.C. on the 24th.
