The Intern, starring actors Choi Minsik and Han So-hee, put a stop to the consecutive six-week weekend box office streak of The Odyssey.
According to the Korean Film Council's integrated ticketing computer network on September 21, The Intern drew 275,182 moviegoers from September 18 to 20. Its cumulative audience reached 403,902. This marks the first time a South Korean film has claimed the top spot at the box office in about 50 days since HOPE.
Having opened on September 16, The Intern debuted at No. 1 and maintained its momentum through the weekend. However, with weekend attendance lingering in the 200,000 range, its future box office prospects are not entirely optimistic. This is because multiple new films, including The Assassin(s), Tazza: The Song of Beelzebub, and Possible Love, are scheduled to open simultaneously on September 23.
Second place went to The Odyssey, which attracted 256,792 viewers over the same period, bringing its cumulative audience to 11,217,640. Entering its seventh week of release, it yielded the top spot to The Intern, but its lingering stamina remains formidable. If it continues to show strength this week amid the consecutive releases of new films targeting the Chuseok holiday, surpassing 12 million cumulative moviegoers appears achievable.
