Democratic Party of Korea leader Kim Min-seok stated, "The president has expressed his commitment to constitutional revision multiple times and clearly cleared the obstacles raised by the opposition."
Attending a press conference marking the launch of the party's constitutional revision promotion committee at the National Assembly today (September 20), Kim said, "In fact, there was no obstacle in the first place."
President Lee Jae-myung held a press conference at the Blue House on September 18, stating, "Serving consecutive terms through constitutional amendment is constitutionally impossible for me. I have absolutely no intention of seeking a second term."
Kim remarked, "Constantly demanding a declaration of renouncing consecutive terms when there was no such intention was strange, as if asking to admit there had been other motives," adding, "Now is the time to shift toward serious discussions on constitutional revision rather than quibbling over words."
He continued, "The spirit of the May 18 Democratization Movement and the Buma Democratic Uprising must be explicitly stated in the preamble of the Constitution," urging, "Is there any reason for the People Power Party, which claims to succeed President Kim Young-sam—who made May 18 the historical identity of his civilian government—to oppose this? They must embrace May 18 and put an end to anti-May 18 rhetoric."
Kim said, "Taking the president's press conference as momentum, the Democratic Party will go all-in and all-in once more solely on people's livelihoods," adding, "The essence of constitutional revision must also be a revision for people's livelihoods and national unity."
He went on to emphasize, "We must reform the power structure and improve the political system based on public consensus," stressing, "We must reflect a dignified society that guarantees a dignified life for all citizens—that is, a dignified basic society and basic social rights."
Kim said, "The Democratic Party will walk the path toward success in public livelihoods, state affairs, constitutional amendment, national unity, and consecutive terms in power," adding, "We will inherit the history of Kim Dae-jung, who achieved success in national administration and consecutive governance, and reflect on the history of Roh Moo-hyun, who fell victim to politically motivated prosecution while attempting national unity."
Kim added, "Now is the time for the country, the people, the democratic forces, and the party to unite even more firmly around President Lee," urging, "Please help the president and the government. The party will also give its all."
