A 1-ton truck crashed into a flea market event in Anseong, Gyeonggi Province, this morning (September 19), leaving a mother and her teenage son dead and five others injured.
According to police and fire authorities, at around 11:18 a.m. today, a 1-ton truck loaded with secondhand goods plowed into a crowd of people at a flea market event held in a children's park in front of Gongdo Library in Gongdo-eup, Anseong, striking seven people.
In the accident, a woman in her 40s and her teenage son were transported to the hospital in cardiac arrest and later died.
In addition, three people including a woman and a man in their 20s and a man in his 60s sustained injuries such as leg fractures and were taken to the hospital, while two others, including a woman in her 50s who showed symptoms of breathing difficulty, received first aid at the scene.
It was reported that a large number of people had gathered at the event venue ahead of the flea market at the time of the accident.
The event was the "2026 Sharing Green Market," hosted by the city of Anseong and organized by the Anseong Council for Sustainable Development.
CCTV footage near the accident scene reportedly captured the truck suddenly pushing about 25 meters into the park.
The vehicle involved in the accident was identified as belonging to Anseong City.
Police believe the accident occurred while a 60s temporary worker at the city hall, identified as Mr. A, was parking the truck on a road near the park to unload secondhand goods stored in the vehicle into the event venue.
According to reports, Mr. A initially stated during police questioning that he "mistook the accelerator pedal for the brake," but later changed his statement to claim that "the vehicle suddenly accelerated on its own."
Police and fire authorities are investigating the exact circumstances of the accident by questioning the driver and witnesses.
