The 76th Anniversary Commemoration of the Recapture of Seoul, hosted by the Republic of Korea Marine Corps Headquarters and sponsored by the Seoul Metropolitan Government and the Marine Corps Veterans Association, was held today (September 19).
Held at Seoul Plaza, the event was organized to honor the sacrifice and dedication of veterans who defended South Korea's freedom by retaking Seoul during the Korean War, and to reflect on its historical significance and value.
About 2,000 people attended the ceremony, including key figures such as Marine Corps Commandant Ju Il-suk, Seoul Mayor Oh Sehun, National Assembly member Yu Yong-won, and Commander of the ROK-U.S. Combined Forces Command Xavier Brunson, as well as bereaved families and veterans.
In his commemorative address, Commandant Ju said, "The history of the recapture of Seoul reminds us today that the freedom and prosperity of the Republic of Korea stem from the sacrifice and dedication of nameless heroes," adding, "The Marine Corps will carry forward the noble will of our senior Marines for justice and freedom, and fulfill our mission as a loyal Marine Corps that protects the nation."
As the main event, a relay ceremony of the Taegeukgi (South Korean national flag) was held.
The relayed national flag was handed over by war veteran Moon Sang-seon (4th Marine Corps class) to Second Lieutenant Yu Hyunsuk, a platoon leader of the 6th Company, 12th Battalion of the Marine Corps, during the victory commemoration ceremony for the Incheon Landing Operation on September 15.
South Korean and U.S. Marines along with the Marine Corps Veterans Association relayed the national flag from Wolmido Plaza to Seoul Plaza, and on this day, the flag—passed through the platoon leader, the veteran, and Mayor Oh to the Marine Corps Honor Guard—was hoisted at Seoul Plaza.
With this event, the Marine Corps concluded all of its September victory commemoration events held in Jeju, Incheon, and Seoul since August 29.
