Sam Altman, CEO of ChatGPT developer OpenAI, is set to deliver a presentation on artificial intelligence (AI) safety at the United Nations Security Council.
Reuters reported on the 18th (local time), citing an OpenAI spokesperson, that Altman is scheduled to attend and brief an upcoming UN Security Council meeting next week focusing on AI and international security.
During the briefing, Altman plans to introduce measures OpenAI is taking to ensure AI safety and benefit all of humanity, while emphasizing the need for international cooperation and common safety standards.
The upcoming UN Security Council meeting comes amid heightened interest in AI safety, following recent calls by Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei for a slowdown in AI development, which has been echoed by heads of major AI companies including Altman.
Notably, despite their known rivalry, Altman and Amodei have unexpectedly shared similar views, with Altman actively speaking out to warn that AI could potentially escape human control.
Altman has long warned about the risks of AI technology, noting in a 2015 blog post that "the development of superhuman machine intelligence is likely to be the biggest threat to the continued existence of humanity."
The UN Security Council previously held a meeting on the risks of AI in 2023.
At that meeting, China argued that the technology must not become uncontrollable like a "runaway horse," while the United States expressed concerns that AI technology should not be used for censorship or repression.
