Police are investigating the head of a banner production and installation company in connection with the death of a daily worker in his 70s who fell while installing congratulatory local election banners in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi Province.
The Gyeonggi Nambu Provincial Police Agency's metropolitan investigation unit announced today (September 18) that it has booked and is questioning the head of the company, identified by the surname A, on charges of professional negligence resulting in death.
A is suspected of failing to take proper safety measures regarding B, a man in his 70s who was performing banner installation work on a roadside in Cheonggye-dong, Dongtan-gu, Hwaseong, around 12:00 PM on June 4.
At the time, B and a colleague placed a ladder against a traffic light pole to install banners celebrating winners of the June 3 local elections, when B reportedly lost his footing and fell about 1.7 meters to the ground.
B suffered a head injury and was transported to a hospital for treatment, but died on July 12, 38 days after the accident.
The case, initially investigated by the Hwaseong Dongtan Police Station, was transferred to the Serious Accident Investigation Team of the Gyeonggi Nambu Provincial Police Agency's metropolitan investigation unit, which handles industrial fatality accidents, following B's death.
Police plan to investigate A to determine the exact circumstances, including whether safety equipment was provided at the time of the accident.
